Who is a good candidate for plastic surgery?
Plastic and cosmetic surgery is not a one-size-fits-all decision, and candidacy depends on your overall health, goals, and individual anatomy.
A consultation with Dr Brian Yue may be right for you if:
- You have scarring from previous surgery, trauma, or a skin condition that you would like to improve
- You have excess or sagging skin following significant weight loss that cannot be resolved through diet and exercise alone
- You are bothered by drooping or heavy eyelids that affect your vision or self-confidence
- You are seeking facial rejuvenation to address the visible effects of ageing
- You have concerns about the shape, size, or proportion of your nose
- You experience self-consciousness due to excess breast tissue (gynaecomastia) that has not responded to lifestyle changes
- You have localised pockets of fat that persist despite maintaining a healthy weight and exercise routine
A GP referral is required to book your initial consultation. We will take the time to understand your goals, explain all available options, and recommend a treatment plan based on your individual circumstances.

Eyelid surgery
Blepharoplasty corrects drooping or excess skin around the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Upper eyelid surgery removes tissue that may impair vision or create a heavy, fatigued appearance. Lower eyelid surgery addresses puffiness, bags, and fine lines beneath the eyes.
The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthetic with sedation as a day procedure. Most patients are comfortable being seen socially within 1-2 weeks, with recovery generally straightforward.

Facelift
A facelift (Rhytidectomy/Meloplasty) addresses the visible signs of facial ageing by lifting and repositioning the deeper facial tissues, removing excess skin, and restoring the natural contours of the face and neck. Modern techniques work below the skin surface, producing results that look refreshed rather than pulled.
Depending on the extent of rejuvenation desired, a full facelift or a more limited approach may be recommended. Recovery typically involves bruising and swelling that resolve over 2-3 weeks, with most patients comfortable socially within 3-4 weeks.

Gynaecomastia
Gynaecomastia is the development of excess glandular tissue or fat in the male chest, resulting in a breast-like appearance. It is a common condition that can cause significant self-consciousness, particularly in adolescent and younger adult men.
Surgery removes the excess glandular tissue, fat, or both through a small incision around the areola, often combined with liposuction to achieve a flat, well-defined chest contour.

Liposuction
Liposuction removes localised deposits of fat from specific areas of the body, including the abdomen, flanks, thighs, upper arms, and chin. It works best for patients who are close to their ideal body weight but have stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise.
The procedure uses a fine cannula to suction fat from beneath the skin and can be performed alone or combined with other procedures such as abdominoplasty or skin reduction surgery. Results are long-lasting when weight remains stable, and the final outcome is typically visible within 3-6 months as post-operative swelling resolves.

Nose reshaping
Rhinoplasty alters the shape, size, or proportion of the nose to improve its appearance, function, or both. It is among the most technically demanding procedures in plastic surgery, requiring specialist knowledge of nasal anatomy and a meticulous surgical approach to achieve a natural, harmonious result.
Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, and early results are visible once swelling reduces over the first few weeks. The final outcome of rhinoplasty can take up to 12 months to fully emerge, as residual swelling gradually resolves and the tissues settle into their new position.

Scar revision
Scar revision surgery improves the appearance, texture, or functional impact of a scar that has healed poorly following surgery, trauma, burns, or a skin condition. While no scar can be entirely erased, skilled surgical revision can significantly reduce its visibility and improve the surrounding skin.
Technique selection depends on the type, location, and maturity of the scar. Options include direct excision, Z-plasty or W-plasty to reorient the scar line, dermabrasion, and laser treatment used alongside surgical revision. We will assess your scar at the consultation and advise on the approach most likely to achieve a lasting improvement.

Skin Reduction
After substantial weight loss, many patients are left with excess hanging skin that cannot be addressed solely with non-surgical treatments. Skin reduction surgery removes this tissue to improve comfort, hygiene, and physical appearance, and to allow patients to fully enjoy the results of their weight loss.
Common procedures in this category include body lifts (lower, mid, or upper), brachioplasty (arm lift), thigh lifts, and back lifts. Procedures are often staged across multiple operations. We work closely with patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, allowing for a well-coordinated approach to body contouring after weight loss.

Tummy tuck surgery
Abdominoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen while tightening the underlying abdominal muscles. It is particularly suited to patients who have experienced significant weight loss, multiple pregnancies, or changes to the abdominal wall that cannot be resolved through exercise alone.
The procedure can address loose or overhanging skin, weakened or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti), and contour irregularities in the lower abdomen. Recovery involves a short hospital stay, and most patients return to light activity within 2-4 weeks.

Understanding what to expect at each stage helps reduce uncertainty and lets you feel fully prepared. Here is what plastic surgery typically looks like at Specialist Surgical Group.
1. GP referral
Your GP has referred you to us. A standard referral is valid for 12 months and entitles you to a Medicare rebate on your consultation fee.
Where a procedure is being performed for cosmetic rather than functional reasons, we will clarify the applicable fees at your first appointment. If you need help finding a GP, we can assist.
2. Initial consultation
You will meet with us to discuss your concerns, goals, and medical history. He will examine the area of interest, clearly walk you through your options, and answer your questions without pressure.
Photography may be taken during this appointment to assist with surgical planning. Additional assessments may be requested before a formal recommendation is made.
3. Pre-operative assessment
Prior to surgery, you will complete any required blood tests, imaging, and specialist assessments.
You will also receive clear instructions covering medications to avoid, fasting requirements, and how to prepare at home for your recovery period.
4. Procedure day
Procedures are performed at an accredited Melbourne hospital or day surgery facility, with most patients admitted on the morning of surgery.
Your length of stay will vary by procedure, from a day procedure for blepharoplasty or liposuction to a 1-2-night hospital stay for abdominoplasty, facelift, or skin reduction surgery.
5. Post-operative recovery
You will leave the hospital with detailed written instructions covering wound care, use of a compression garment, activity restrictions, and signs to watch for during recovery.
We are available to answer questions at any stage and to address concerns promptly as you heal at home.
6. Long-term follow-up
We schedule follow-up appointments at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months post-surgery, with further reviews as your recovery progresses.
Plastic surgery results can continue to develop over many months, and ongoing support remains available throughout this period for as long as you need it.

(03) 9466 7338Plastic & cosmetic surgery FAQ
Yes. A referral from your GP or specialist is required to book your initial consultation. A standard GP referral is valid for 12 months and entitles you to a Medicare rebate on your consultation fee. Ask your GP to address the referral to Dr Brian Yue by name.
Coverage depends on whether the procedure is performed for medical or functional reasons rather than purely for cosmetic purposes. Procedures such as upper eyelid surgery affecting vision, gynaecomastia correction, scar revision, and post-weight-loss skin reduction may attract a Medicare rebate and private health insurance benefit if eligibility criteria are met. Purely cosmetic procedures are generally not covered. We will clarify applicable fees and potential rebates at your consultation, and we recommend contacting your insurer beforehand to confirm your entitlements.
Recovery varies considerably depending on the procedure. Blepharoplasty and liposuction typically allow patients to return to light activity within 1-2 weeks. More involved procedures, such as abdominoplasty, facelift, or skin reduction surgery, may require 4-6 weeks before returning to full activity.
All surgical procedures result in some degree of scarring. We take care to place incisions in discreet or natural locations wherever possible, and to close wounds in a manner that minimises long-term visibility. In most cases, scars fade significantly over the first 12 months following surgery. For patients concerned about existing scars, scar revision surgery or a combined treatment plan may be appropriate.
Patients who have undergone bariatric surgery with us are well placed to discuss body contouring procedures once their weight has stabilised, typically 12-18 months after their bariatric procedure. A coordinated approach between the two care teams ensures the timing and sequence of any body contouring surgery is optimised for both safety and outcome.
