Our weight-loss practice is led by experienced bariatric surgeons, Dr Chek Tog (MBBS, FRACS) and Dr Ben Keong (MBBS, FRACS). We provide personalised, multidisciplinary care at every stage of your weight loss journey
Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is a clinically proven
treatment for adults living with obesity who have not achieved lasting results
through diet and lifestyle changes alone. It can significantly reduce the risk
of serious health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.
We have clinics in Essendon and Bundoora, serving patients across Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs.

Am I a candidate for weight loss surgery?
Weight loss surgery may be suitable for you if:
- You have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or above, or a BMI of 30 or above
with an obesity-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure,
or sleep apnoea - You have made genuine attempts to lose weight through diet, exercise, and
lifestyle changes without sustained success - You do not have underlying medical conditions that would make surgery unsafe
- You are psychologically prepared for the lifestyle changes that come with
bariatric surgery - You are committed to long-term dietary modifications and follow-up care
after your procedure
You do not need to meet every criterion. Suitability is always assessed
individually. We take the time to understand your full medical history,
goals, and lifestyle before recommending the most appropriate procedure for you.
A GP referral is required to book your initial consultation.

Gastric sleeve surgery
The most commonly performed bariatric procedure in Australia. Approximately 75-80% of the stomach is removed laparoscopically, leaving a narrow sleeve that limits food intake and significantly reduces hunger hormones (ghrelin).
Most patients are admitted to the hospital for 1-2 nights. Gastric sleeve is generally recommended for adults with a BMI of 35 or above, or 30 and above with an obesity-related condition, and typically results in 60-70% excess weight loss within 12-18 months.

Gastric bypass surgery
Creates a small stomach pouch and reroutes part of the small intestine, reducing both food intake and calorie absorption.
Performed laparoscopically with a typical hospital stay of 2-3 nights.
Delivers strong, durable weight loss and is particularly effective for patients with type 2 diabetes, severe gastro-oesophageal reflux, or higher BMIs.

Gastric band surgery
An adjustable silicone band is placed laparoscopically around the upper stomach to create a small pouch that restricts portion size.
The band can be tightened, loosened, or removed over time, making it the only fully reversible surgical weight-loss option. It involves a shorter recovery than sleeve or bypass surgery, with most patients discharged the same day.
Best suited for patients with a lower BMI or those who are not candidates for more invasive procedures.

Gastric balloon
A soft silicone balloon is placed into the stomach via an endoscope. No surgery or general anaesthesia required. It partially fills the stomach, promoting early fullness and reducing portion sizes.
The balloon is typically removed after six months and is best suited for patients with a BMI of 27-35 who prefer a non-surgical approach. It can be used as a standalone treatment or as a bridge to further weight loss before a surgical procedure.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)
A minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure using an endoscope to place internal sutures that reduce stomach capacity by up to 70%.
There are no incisions, no general anaesthesia, and recovery is significantly shorter than traditional bariatric surgery.
ESG is suitable for patients with a BMI of 30-40 who prefer to avoid surgery or those who are not medically eligible for a surgical procedure. Most patients return home the same day and resume normal activities within 1-2 weeks.

Mini gastric bypass surgery
A streamlined version of the standard gastric bypass with a single intestinal connection, shorter operating time, and comparable weight loss outcomes. Performed laparoscopically, with most patients discharged after 1-2 nights.
It combines stomach restriction with mild malabsorption and is well-suited for patients with higher BMIs or those seeking a simpler surgical approach.

Revision bariatric surgery
For patients who have had prior weight-loss surgery and have experienced complications, insufficient weight loss, or weight regain over time.
Revision procedures are technically more complex than primary operations and require a surgeon with specialist experience. We perform gastric band removal, sleeve-to-bypass conversion, pouch resizing, and other corrective procedures.
Comparing your weight loss options
Choosing the right procedure depends on your BMI, medical history, lifestyle, and weight loss goals. Use this comparison table as a starting point. We will recommend the most suitable option at your consultation.
| Procedure | Type | Typical Excess Weight Loss | Hospital Stay | Reversible |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gastric sleeve | Surgical | 60-70% | 1-2 days | No |
| Gastric bypass | Surgical | 70-80% | 2-3 days | No |
| Gastric band | Surgical | 40-60% | 1 day | Yes |
| Gastric balloon | Non-surgical | 10-15% | Day procedure | Yes |
| ESG | Non-surgical | 15-20% | Day procedure | Yes |
| Mini gastric bypass | Surgical | 65-75% | 2-3 days | No |

(03) 9466 7338Your bariatric surgery journey
Understanding what to expect at each stage helps reduce uncertainty and lets you feel fully prepared. Here is what the process typically looks like at Specialist Surgical Group.
1. GP referral
Your GP provides a referral to one of our bariatric surgeons. A standard GP referral is valid for 12 months and entitles you to a Medicare rebate on your consultation fee.
The referral should be addressed to our practice rather than a specific surgeon, so we can match you with the most appropriate bariatric specialist. If you need help finding a GP, we are happy to assist.
2. Initial consultation
You will meet with us to discuss your medical history, weight loss history, goals, and any relevant health conditions.
Consultations typically run 30-45 minutes. We will explain which procedures may be suitable, answer your questions, and begin forming a personalised treatment plan.
There is no obligation to proceed, and you are encouraged to bring a support person if you wish.
3. Pre-operative assessment
Before surgery, you will complete blood tests, imaging, and assessments by our dietitian and psychologist.
This stage typically takes place 4-8 weeks before your procedure and includes a pre-operative dietary plan and an anaesthetic review.
Our care coordinator manages all referrals and appointments, ensuring the process is as straightforward as possible. This stage confirms you are medically and emotionally prepared to proceed.
4. Procedure day
Surgical procedures are performed at an accredited Melbourne hospital under the care of your surgeon and an experienced anaesthetic team.
Most patients are admitted on the morning of surgery and will receive clear fasting instructions beforehand.
Depending on the procedure, most patients are discharged within 1-3 days. You will leave the hospital with a detailed discharge pack and direct contact details for your care team.
5. Post-operative recovery
We provide clear guidance on your post-operative diet, progressing from liquids through to purée and soft foods before returning to a normal diet.
We also advise on activity levels, wound care, and warning signs to watch for. Our care coordinator is available by phone throughout your recovery at home, and most patients can return to desk-based work within 2-4 weeks.
6. Long-term follow-up
Your care continues well beyond surgery. We schedule follow-up appointments at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months post-procedure, with ongoing access to our dietitian and care coordinator for as long as you need support.
Annual blood tests and reviews of vitamin and mineral supplementation are recommended for life. You can re-engage with our support team at any point if your needs change.

Dr Ian Michell, MBBS, FRACS
Bariatric, Gastrointestinal & General Surgeon
Why choose us
Our difference lies in combining highly experienced surgeons with the latest surgical innovations and individualised care that puts you first.

Experienced surgeons
Dr Chek Tog, Dr Ben Keong, and Dr Ian Michell are each Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) with advanced specialist training in gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery.
Together, they have performed thousands of weight-loss procedures across Melbourne and hold operating rights at accredited hospitals.

Multi-disciplinary team
Our surgeons work alongside dedicated dietitians, psychologists, nurses, and care coordinators at every stage from your pre-operative assessment right through to your long-term follow-up appointments.
Psychological support and nutritional guidance are built into our standard pathway because we know that lasting results depend on more than surgery alone.

Minimally invasive techniques
Wherever clinically appropriate, our surgeons use laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques that involve just a few small incisions.
Compared with open surgery, this approach typically results in less postoperative pain, a shorter hospital stay, a reduced risk of wound complications, and a faster return to normal activities.
Our reputation speaks volumes

(03) 9466 7338Weight loss surgery FAQ
Generally, weight loss surgery is recommended for adults with a BMI of 35 or above, or a BMI of 30 or above combined with an obesity-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, or high blood pressure. Suitability is always assessed individually at your consultation.
Yes. A referral from your GP or specialist is required. A standard GP referral is valid for 12 months and entitles you to a Medicare rebate on your consultation fee. Ask your GP to address the referral to one of our bariatric surgeons by name.
Most bariatric procedures are covered under private health insurance if you hold an appropriate level of hospital cover and have served any applicable waiting periods (typically 12 months for pre-existing conditions). We recommend contacting your insurer before your consultation to confirm your entitlements. Medicare rebates apply to the surgeon’s fee regardless of your insurance status.
Gastric sleeve surgery removes approximately 75-80% of the stomach, reducing its capacity and lowering ghrelin levels. Gastric bypass additionally reroutes part of the small intestine, reducing calorie absorption. Bypass generally produces slightly greater weight loss and is particularly effective for patients with severe reflux or type 2 diabetes, but it is a more complex procedure. We will recommend the most suitable option based on your individual health profile.
Weight loss depends on the procedure, your starting weight, and your adherence to post-surgery dietary and lifestyle changes. As a general guide, gastric sleeve patients typically lose 60-70% of excess weight, gastric bypass patients 70-80%, and gastric band patients 40-60% over 12-24 months. Non-surgical options such as the gastric balloon produce more modest results over a shorter timeframe.
Most patients return home within 1–3 days of a surgical procedure. Light activities can typically resume within 1–2 weeks, and normal activity within 4–6 weeks. Your specific recovery timeline will be discussed in detail at your pre-operative appointment.
Gastric sleeve and gastric bypass are considered permanent procedures. Gastric band surgery is adjustable and fully reversible. The gastric balloon is temporary and is typically removed after 6 months. If you have had a previous procedure that hasn’t delivered the results you hoped for, revisional surgery may be an option.
