A lumpectomy (wide local excision) removes only the tumour and a margin of surrounding healthy tissue, preserving the majority of the breast. A mastectomy involves removing the entire breast. Medically indicated breast procedures, including mastectomy, lumpectomy, breast reconstruction following cancer treatment, and breast reduction when clinically justified, are typically covered by Medicare and private health insurance with an appropriate level of hospital cover. Immediate breast reconstruction, performed at the same time as mastectomy, is an option for many patients and is associated with good oncological and cosmetic outcomes. Delayed reconstruction, performed as a separate procedure after cancer treatment is complete, is also available. Recovery varies depending on the procedure. Most patients return to light daily activities within 1-2 weeks following lumpectomy or mastopexy. Recovery after mastectomy or breast reconstruction typically takes 4-6 weeks before a return to normal activity. A breast lift (mastopexy) reshapes and elevates existing breast tissue by removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple to a higher position. It does not significantly increase breast volume. Breast augmentation uses implants to increase size and projection. The two procedures can be combined for patients who wish to both lift and add volume simultaneously.
